Beavers Open 2018 Season at Portland State
August 29, 2018 | Women's Cross Country
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State cross country team, along with second year head coach Louie Quintana, open the 2018 season on Saturday morning at the 1st Annual Viking Rust Buster in Portland.
Hosted by Portland State at Blue Lake Park, the women's collegiate 4,000-meter race follows the men's collegiate race beginning at 10 a.m. You can follow along with all the action via the live results.
The course starts and finishes on grass, with the whole route featuring a mixture of grass, dirt, gravel and two asphalt crossings.
On a team that features a lot of new faces head coach Quintana is very optimistic. "We are young and inexperienced, but very talented," began Quintana.
"The first week of practice has gone surprisingly well. We have a lot of work to do but I feel we are in a lot better position now than at the start of the fall a season ago."
This year's Beavers feature eight returners and nine newcomers. Of the returners only five ran in a race last season; Rebecca Ledsham, Audrey Lookner, Juliana Mount, Lexi Reed and Greta Van Calcar.
Mount brings a wealth of experience to a young group having earned her first NCAA West All-Region selection in 2017. "JJ being our lone senior it is really important," began Quintana. "She has the experience and success that we all want. Having someone who has fully bought in and saw the results last year finishing All-Region, she is a real leader on this team."
"We've turned our roster over and within a year have a brand new team," said Quintana. OSU's first year members include Sydney Boland, Grace Fetherstonhaugh, Alyssa Foote, Maddie Fuhrman, Alexa Hayes, McKenna Henke, Brigette Takeuchi and Haley Wolf. "The freshman (newcomers) are very mature for being new, they have come in and are immediately in our front five."
Lexi Reed, Sara Christianson, Maddie Fuhrman, Batya Beard, Alyssa Foote and Rebecca Ledsham are set to make the trek up to Portland for OSU. Only half of the traveling party for this weekend's race have run in a Beavers uniform; Reed, Christianson and Ledsham.
Beard didn't compete last fall, utilizing her redshirt season. However, Fuhrman and Foote do bring some collegiate experience to the group having spent time at the University of Hawaii and Seattle Pacific, respectively.
"We are running a group that needs to compete," said Quintana. "The team knows that it's really early, so the focus is simply on going out and competing again."
Despite the new faces, the Beavers find themselves ranked in the first regional rankings from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Oregon State finished the 2017 season 13th in the regional rankings, but open the 2018 season ranked at No. 10 in the West Region. In total, six Pacific-12 Conference teams make up the top 10, with Stanford taking the top spot.
This weekend the Beavers look to start the 2018 campaign off on the right foot with a focus on the future. "I want to go up there [Portland], get a good effort and stay healthy and get ready for Sundodger [Invitational] next week." Â
This season features six regular season events before the Pac-12 Championships in late October. "This year, I felt we were a little bit better and that we needed to try and win some points with the NCAA early on in the season," said Quintana.
"I decided we would run Wisconsin [Nuttycombe Invitational] early in late September, because we start school late so there is no stress there. The girls can go out and compete hard against the best teams in the country."
After this weekend's opener the Beavers head to Seattle for the Sundodger Invitational on Sept. 8. A couple week break precedes the Nuttycombe Invitational at the University of Wisconsin on Sept. 28.
Following the big road trip to the Midwest the schedule shifts towards the postseason. "I felt like we needed to limit our level of travel and focus on our training late in the season," said Quintana.
The Beavers head to Santa Clara, Calif. on Oct. 13 for the Bronco Invitational and end the regular season at the Beaver Classic at Avery Park on Oct. 20.
The Pac-12 Championships are hosted by Stanford on Oct. 26 at the Stanford Golf Course, with the NCAA West Regional Meet taking place on Friday, Nov. 9 in Sacramento, Calif.
