Jonathan Smith's Debut —
- Jonathan Smith is making his debut as a collegiate head coach when the Beavers open the season Saturday. He is the first OSU coach to make his collegiate debut for the Beavers since Mike Riley in 1997.
- Smith arrived in Corvallis in December after four seasons as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Washington. He had also served as the QB coach at Boise State from 2012-13, the OC/QB coach at Montana from 2010-11 and the quarterbacks coach at Idaho from 2004-09.
- Smith, who lettered for the Beavers from 1998-2001, got started in the collegiate ranks as a grad assistant at Oregon State from 2002-03.
- Under Smith, Washington nearly set a school record and was ranked eighth nationally averaging 41.8 points per game in 2016. The Huskies made an appearance in the College Football Playoff that season and finished fourth nationally.
- Washington played in the Fiesta Bowl in 2017 and earned a share of the Pac-12 North title.
- Smith has played in or coached in 10 bowl games, and in six dating back to the 2012 season.

- Oregon State University President Dr. Ed Ray served as a member of the economics faculty at Ohio State from 1970-2003. He was the economics chair from 1976 to 1992, associate provost from May 1992 until May 1993 and was the senior vice provost and chief information officer from 1993-1998. He ended his tenure in Columbus as executive vice president and provost from 1998-2003.
- Defensive Coordinator Tim Tibesar served as the outside linebackers coach at Wisconsin from 2015-17, and defensive coordinator at Purdue in 2012. His teams went 0-3 versus Ohio State, but lost each game by seven points or less.
- Tight ends coach Brian Wozniak hails from Loveland, Ohio, located approximately 90 minutes from Columbus. Wozniak finished his eligibility with Wisconsin in 2013, and the Badgers went 1-3 versus the Buckeyes.
- Greg Burns coached the defensive backs for Purdue in 2012, and the Boilermakers lost 29-22 in overtime. Burns' secondary held the Buckeyes to just 190 passing yards while picking off two passes.

- Saturday's game against the Buckeyes marks the fourth time the Beavers will have a game start at 9 a.m. on the West Coast since 2005.

Bray, who played at Oregon State from 2002-05, has six years as an assistant in the Pac-12 after serving on the staff of Arizona State from 2009-11. was named as a nominee for the Broyles Award (top assistant coach) while at Nebraska in 2016.
- Jake Cookus is in his first year as the special teams coordinator at Oregon State after spending two years as a quality control analyst. He lettered at OSU from 1998-2001, and has been an assistant at Hawai'i, Montana and Weber State. He has led two units to top-20 rankings in net punting - Hawai'i (sixth) in 2015 and Montana (20th) in 2014.
- James Rodgers is the team's director of player development. He played at Oregon State from 2007-11, and is third all-time with 222 catches, and sixth with 2,578 receiving yards. He played in three bowl games and is credited with the emergence of the "fly sweep" at Oregon State.
