Beavers Open Practice for 2018 Season
August 01, 2018 | Women's Soccer
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State women's soccer team opened practice for the 2018 season on Wednesday, as the Beavers returned to the field for their first training session of the year. With a mixture of young players and experienced upperclassman, OSU was excited to get back on the field.
Â
"I thought it was a good start for the overall group," said head coach Linus Rhode. "We had a good morning to assess where everyone is at. For us, it was a good first day."
Â
Oregon State's core of returners is led by senior Allison Pantuso, who started 18 matches last season in the midfield and as a centerback. She is joined by juniors Nicole Nickerson and Ashleigh Fonsen. Nickerson made 17 starts in the midfield last season, while Fonsen started 16 matches as a defender.
Â
"People did well and came out to train hard this morning," said Nickerson. "It was a good practice, and we're looking forward to the season."
Â
The Beavers head into the upcoming campaign after winning their final two games of 2017, including a victory over Oregon in the Civil War. Rhode became Oregon State's all-time winningest head coach last season, and will enter the 2018 campaign with 86 career victories.
Â
Oregon State will continue training in the coming weeks, as it prepares for their exhibition vs. UBC on Aug. 11. Oregon State will open its 2018 campaign on Aug. 17 when it hosts Clemson at Lorenz Field. The team's full schedule can be found here.
