Beavers Use The Long Ball In Saturday’s Win
March 17, 2018 | Baseball
The win pushed Oregon State to its 17th consecutive regular-season series victory, and the 12th in Pac-12 Conference play dating back to the 2016 season. The Beavers will go for a sweep Sunday in the series finale, a 1:05 p.m. PT first pitch.
Two of the Beavers' three long balls came after a rain delay that last more than 90 minutes. Larnach's came as a solo blast to tie the game at two in the fifth. An inning later, the Golden Bears went up 3-2 thanks to a bases-loaded walk.
Then the Oregon State bats came alive.
Rutschman hit a two-run blast off the scoreboard in the left center to put OSU up 4-3 in the seventh. Grenier followed that round tripper up with his first of the year an inning later. The two-run homer put the Beavers up 6-3 and preceded back-to-back-to-back doubles by Larnach, Rutschman and Preston Jones for a five-run lead.
Bryce Fehmel started for the Beavers (17-1 overall, 2-0 Pac-12 Conference), but did not figure in the decision. He exited after 5 1/3 innings – right before the rain delay – and allowed six hits and three runs.
California (12-6, 0-2) starter Aaron Shortridge also did not receive a decision. He worked six innings, scattering eight hits and two runs.
Oregon State right-hander Kevin Abel picked up the win after an inning of scoreless relief. He improved to 2-0 this season.
The loss was charged to Cal reliever Arman Sabouri, who surrendered Rutschman's seventh-inning home run. He dropped to 2-2 this season.
Oregon State rapped out 14 hits off four California pitchers. Rutschman and Steven Kwan paced OSU with three hits apiece, while Grenier, Larnach and Andy Armstrong all tallied two.
Brandon Eisert earned his second save of the season after allowing two hits and a run in 2 2/3 innings.

Casey At 862
The win marked the 862nd for head coach Pat Casey during his tenure at Oregon State, moving him into sole possession of sixth place all-time in Pac-12 Conference history. He surpassed the late Jerry Kindall, who won 861 games at Arizona from 1973-94.
For The Sweep Sunday
Oregon State will be looking for its first sweep of California in Berkeley since 2014. The Beavers swept both the 2012 and 2014 series at Cal after getting swept in 2010. The last series in Berkeley that did not end in a sweep came in 2008 when Cal won two-of-three.
12 Straight
The win Saturday marked Oregon State's 12th consecutive in Pac-12 play dating back to 2017 – 10 straight to end that campaign and the first two this season. The last time OSU won 12 straight in league play was the start of the 2017 conference season. The Beavers opened Pac-12 play 12-0 last season.
Rain Delay
Saturday's game was delayed for one hour, 38 minutes in the bottom half of the sixth inning due to rain. It was the first delay of any kind for the Beavers this season.
