March 12, 2018 | Women's Golf
ST. GEORGE, Utah – Nicole Schroeder fired a pair of 1-under 71's to lead the Oregon State women's golf team at the Entrada Classic on Monday.
Â
Schroeder had nine birdies on the day - four in the first round and five in the second - to put her in a tie for third place with a 2-under 142. She has been under par in seven of 13 rounds during her sophomore campaign and has a chance to record a career-best finish (t-8th, Ron Moore Invitational, Fall 2017).
Â
As a team, Oregon State sits in fifth place after shooting a 14-over 291-299--590 at the par-72, 6,098-yard Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club.
Â
The Beavers are in position to post their third top-five finish in as many spring tournaments, after finishing fifth at the Westbrook Spring Invitational and third at the Meadow Club Women's Intercollegiate.
Â
Kent State leads the 14-team field with an even-par 576, while host BYU is second (2-over 578), North Carolina is third (9-over 585) and Texas Tech is fourth (11-over 587).
Â
Pimnipa Panthong of Kent State (6-under 67-71--138) is four strokes ahead of Schroeder and Kendra Dalton of BYU (5-under 71-68--139) has a three-stroke edge.
Â
The final round of the two-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 8:30 a.m. MT (7:30 a.m. PT) on Tuesday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
Â
"Nicole played two great rounds that kept us in it," Oregon State head coach Dawn Shockley said. "We need to compete for 18 holes tomorrow and post four solid scores to move up the leaderboard."
Â
Freshman Ellie Slama shot a bogey-free 3-under 69 in the first round but a 4-over 76 in the afternoon to slip 10 spots into a tie for 13th place with a 1-over 145.
Â
Junior Olivia Benzin had a solid second round to move 14 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 28th place with a 6-over 77-73--150.
Â
Sophomore Mari Nishiura, who is seeing her first action of the spring, is tied for 37th place with a 9-over 74-79--153 and senior Susie Cavanagh is tied for 50th after concluding the opening day with a 12-over 77-79--156.
