Beavers Knock Off Spartans on Senior Day

CORVALLIS, Ore. – For the second time this week, the Oregon State gymnastics team won at Gill Coliseum, this time defeating Michigan State 196.800-191.350 on Senior Day. The Beavers drew 2,954 fans to meet which marked the final home meet in the careers of seniors Dani Dessaints and Shireen Khamedoost.

Dessaints, who had not performed a routine for the Beavers since Feb. 10 at Washington, returned to the uneven bars lineup where she posted a career-best score of 9.90 to win the event.

"Senior Day is always a special time and there is a lot of emotion for the entire team," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "It was good for the team and good for Dani (Dessaints) to return this week. We'll see how she continues to progress in the coming weeks. And Shireen performed solid routines today as well. I'm happy for them to have had their moment in Gill Coliseum and now we'll look for them to continue to lead this team into the postseason."

Junior McKenna Singley secured her second all-around title of the week and third of her career scoring 39.300. Singley finished fourth or better on each event including tying for meet-high honors on the floor exercise.

Oregon State led the meet from the outset scoring 49.050 on the vault in the opening rotation. Kaitlyn Yanish and Destinee Davis registered matching scores of 9.850 to tie for the event title. Mary Jacobsen added a 9.80 to take third on the event.

The Beavers used a solid bars set to widen the gap at the midway point to lead 98.250-96.975. Dessaints' 9.90 earn meet-high honors while Khamedoost snagged second with a 9.850. Singley and Jacobsen each added scores of 9.825 and Halli Briscoe, who made her college debut on Monday, scored 9.80.

On the beam, Davis tied her career-best with a 9.90 to earn her second of three event titles. Fellow sophomores Maela Lazaro notched a score of 9.875 and Sabrina Gill added a 9.850 to lead the Beavers. Alyssa Minyard tied her career-best with a 9.825 on the event.

All six OSU floor competitors scored 9.80 or better including Singley, Yanish and Davis, who was making her first career appearance in the floor lineup, tied for the event-high score. Isis Lowery added a 9.850 and Jacobsen and Gill each tallied scores of 9.80.

With the win, OSU concluded its five-meet home slate undefeated including wins over Top 25 teams – No. 23 Stanford, No. 12 Arizona State, No. 24 Arizona and No. 21 BYU.

The Beavers will be on the road for the rest of the season beginning with a quad meet at Sacramento State. OSU will face Pac-12 foe Arizona State as well as UC Davis at The Nest with the meet scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on Friday.
