Beavers Score 196.525 in Loss at UCLA
February 25, 2018 | Women's Gymnastics
LOS ANGELES – The No. 8 Oregon State gymnastics team registered its highest road score of the season for the second time this month but fell to No. 3 UCLA Sunday afternoon, 198.075-196.525.
Â
OSU, which exceeded the 49-point mark on all four events for the fifth time this season, held the early lead at 49.150-49.125 following the opening rotation. However, the Beavers were not as crisp as last week's meet against Arizona, in which they set a season-high 197.300.
Â
The Beavers opened the meet on the uneven bars with a strong start as Mariana Colussi-Pelaez, Alyssa Minyard and Mary Jacobsen each posted scores of 9.850 while Shireen Khamedoost and McKenna Singley added marks of 9.80 to set the Beavers up with the lead.
Â
However, steps on the vault landings in the second rotation proved costly as the OSU lineup tallied a 49.000. Destinee Davis recorded a team-high 9.850 with Singley and Kaitlyn Yanish each tallying scores of 9.80.
Â
Oregon State's sixth-ranked floor lineup rallied from an opening fall to score 49.325. The Beavers' final three of Singley, Isis Lowery and Yanish each registered scores of 9.90. Jacobsen added a 9.825 and Sabrina Gill returned to the floor lineup with a 9.80.
Â
OSU finished with a six-for-six performance on the balance beam, but high scores were hard to come by for the Beavers with Davis and Maela Lazaro leading the squad with scores of 9.850 and Minyard added a 9.825.
Â
"I was happy to see their approach today," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "We just weren't as sharp on landings as we have been and can be. As we approach championship season, we will need to be more disciplined in the details of the routines. This is another opportunity to learn, grow and get better as we move forward."
Â
Oregon State returns to Corvallis to host its final two home meets of the season beginning Mon., March 5 at 7 p.m. against BYU. The Beavers will then be back in Gill Coliseum Sat., March 10 to host Michigan State at 2:30 p.m. for Senior Day.
