Gulich notches third-straight 20-point performance
TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 12-ranked Oregon State women's basketball team cruised to a 65-40 road victory over Arizona Friday evening in Tucson, Ariz.
"I thought we moved the ball well early and really set the tone," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "We had some clunky moments in this game, and you have to give Arizona some credit for that, but overall we did a good job of making plays. This was a great win for us. I thought the team came out and really performed well tonight."
With Friday's results, Oregon State clinched a top-four seed and a first-round bye in the Pac-12 Tournament. The Beavers will open the event on Friday March 2.
Senior Marie Gulich reached the 20 point mark for the third-straight game, finishing 10-for-12 from the floor with 20 points and 12 rebounds. The performance marked the center's 14th double-double of the season.
Junior Katie McWilliams scored 11 points, including nine in the first quarter. Sophomore Mikayla Pivec went for seven points, seven rebounds and three assists.
As a team, Oregon State shot 47.5 percent from the floor, and held Arizona to 26.8 percent shooting from the floor, the lowest percentage by a Beaver opponent in Pac-12 play this season.
Oregon State used a 7-0 first-quarter run to jump in front 18-7, before taking a 23-9 advantage into the second quarter.
The Beavers wasted little time in the second frame, scoring eight unanswered points to go in front by 20 just over two minutes into the period. Oregon State would maintain the lead from there, heading to the break up 35-16.
Oregon State shot 55.2 percent from the floor in the first half, compared to 21.9 percent for Arizona.
The Beavers held the Wildcats at bay in the third quarter, maintaining their advantage to take a 22-point lead into the closing period. Oregon State extended the advantage from there to take the win by 25.
The Beavers will close out the regular season on Sunday, when they head to Tempe for a matchup with Arizona State. That game is slated to tip at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT and will air live on Pac-12 Networks.
