Barnard Inks Two-Year Extension through 2022
February 20, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State volleyball head coach and reigning Pac-12 Coach of the Year Mark Barnard inked a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2022 season, Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Barnes announced Tuesday.
"Coach Barnard has done an outstanding job developing our volleyball team into a NCAA Tournament caliber program," Barnes said. "Under his leadership our student-athletes have achieved many successes on and off the court, and we look forward to continued growth with Coach Barnard at the helm."
The 2017 season featured numerous firsts for Barnard's squad. A nine-win improvement in year two of the Barnard era culminated in the fourth NCAA Tournament berth in program history and the first five-match conference win streak (twice) since 1990. In addition, OSU notched the first weekend sweeps of the Washington and Arizona schools since 1990 and 1996 respectively. The Beavers went on to complete the season sweeps of those schools for the first time since 1984 and 1990. Setter Kylee McLaughlin earned Pac-12 and Region Freshman of the Year honors and Barnard was named the Pac-12's Coach of the Year.
Â
OSU's historic campaign came on the heels of a 2016 season in which they recorded 12 wins, doubling the program's victory total from the previous year.
"I want to thank Scott Barnes and this administration for having the confidence in me to lead this program for the foreseeable future," Barnard said. "This contract gives us the opportunity to be active in the current recruiting climate, meaning we can effectively recruit sophomores with clarity in the direction of the program."
With a 33-30 (.524) record Barnard has the highest winning percentage in his first two years at Oregon State since Jeff Mozzochi went 35-31 (.530) to begin a six-year stint. Throughout his time (2005-present) in Corvallis, Barnard has overseen the team's setters and offense mentoring some of the top student-athletes in program history including Tayla Woods (2011-14) and Megan McBride (2009-12) who finished their careers ranked fourth and sixth respectively in assists in school history. In addition, Barnard's offense has produced dynamic results in the form of outside hitters Rachel Rourke (2006-09) and Mary-Kate Marshall (2014-17), who wrapped up their careers ranked first and second in kills in OSU history.
Â
Off the court, Barnard's teams have starred in the classroom as well as in the community. OSU volleyball student-athletes have earned 12 Pac-12 All-Academic individual honors over the last two seasons. Marshall was a Senior CLASS Award finalist and was named as a Senior CLASS Award All-American in 2017, just one season after earning AVCA All-American honorable mention as a junior in 2016.
Â
Prior to his hiring as the head coach at Oregon State, the 1991 graduate of the University of Sydney in Australia, with a degree in education and science, served as an assistant coach and associate head coach with the Beavers for 11 years. Barnard has international experience at the highest levels working with the Australian Women's National team from 1997-2005, including as an assistant coach at the Sydney Olympics.
