Oregon State Cross Country Travels to NCAA Cross Country Regional Championships
November 07, 2018 | Women's Cross Country
CORVALLIS – This Friday the Oregon State cross country team has a chance to once again make history as it travels to the NCAA Cross Country Regional Championships in Sacramento, the host site for the West Regional Championships.
Hosted by California State University, Sacramento and the Sacramento Sports Commission, the regional is to be held at the Haggin Oaks Golf Course. The women's 6,000-meter race begins first at 11:00 a.m. PT, with the men's 10,000-meter race slated to start at noon. You can follow the action via the live stream or live results.
The Beavers are coming off a record-setting performance at the Pac-12 Cross Country Championships two weeks ago at Stanford. OSU managed its highest finish and lowest point total in school history placing 6th with 173 team points.
"The team is feeling really great, we came off the course at Pac-12s feeling good," began second year cross country head coach Louie Quintana. "It is a young team, they are pretty resilient and have learned a lot about themselves as a team this year."
Oregon State is travelling eight student athletes, seven competitors and an alternate. Slated to compete for the Beavers on Friday are Juliana Mount, Haley Wolf, Mari Friedman, Lexi Reed, Audrey Lookner, Grace Fetherstonhaugh and Brigette Takeuchi, while Alyssa Foote travels as the alternate runner.
Mount has led the Beavers all season as the team's number one finisher in every race she saw, and has experience being an NCAA All-West Region runner last year, the first in Oregon State's history.
True freshman Haley Wolf and Mari Friedman have been impactful all season long. The pair have found themselves in the top five on the Oregon State all-time list for a 6,000-meter race.
"Every race this year has been different," said Quintana. "We have made some great decisions, as well as some tactical errors in other races, but we have shown tremendous resiliency as a group."
An Oregon State cross country team has never made the NCAA Cross Country Championship field, and the Beavers have a legitimate shot this year heading into the regional ranked No. 7 in the West Region. OSU attained its highest regional ranking in school history this season sitting at No. 6 for multiple weeks.
"Knowing that Oregon State has never qualified for the NCAA Championships we are focused solely on running hard and doing what we have to do to get that done," said Quintana. "We had a couple meets where we showed what we could really do when we are all clicking, and we aren't asking our girls to do anything else other than compete."
