November 09, 2018 | Women's Cross Country
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Highlighted by senior Juliana Mount's All-Region performance, the Oregon State cross country once again made history on Friday at the NCAA West Regional Championships with the highest placing in program history at the regional championships.
"Today was a great day to be a Beav," began second year head coach Louie Quintana. "We showed the same resilient spirit we have shown all year and slip past UCLA at th end to get a bid to the NCAAs."
The Beavers ran their way to a sixth place finish totaling 196 team points; both are team-bests for Oregon State at the regionals. OSU came into the event ranked No. 7 in the West Region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, but surpassed Pac-12 Conference opponent No. 6 UCLA on Friday after the Bruins edged out the Beavers at the conference meet two weeks ago.
Oregon took the crown at Haggin Oaks Golf Course with 44 points. Boise State (49 pts.), Stanford (95 pts.), Washington (118 pts.) and Portland (144 pts.) round out the top five.
"We raced incredible over the last half of the race." said Quintana. "We were led once again by JJ's [Mount] great instincts and she had the highest finish of any Beaver in history at regionals."
For the second consecutive year Mount raced to an All-Region designation by finishing in the top 25. Mount improved on her 25th placing a year ago finishing in 12th individually on Friday. She ran her fastest time of the season traversing the 6,000-meter course in 19-minutes, 54.5-seconds.
Freshman Haley Wolf nearly earned a top-25 finish in her inaugural regional championships. Wolf finished in 32nd overall with a time of 20-minutes, 35.3-seconds as Oregon State's number two finisher. Redshirt sophomore Lexi Reed finished third for the Beavers coming in at 20-minutes, 55.2-seconds and in 45th overall.
