Vargas Goes for Career-High, Beavs Fall to Buffaloes
November 18, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – For the second this weekend, the Oregon State volleyball team went to five sets before falling short to Colorado on Sunday afternoon.
Maddie Goings registered a team-best 19 kills and Daniela Vargas added a career-best 13 kills to lead the OSU offense. Defensively, Grace Massey tied her career-high with 30 digs and Maddy Gravley added nine blocks.
With the loss, Oregon State's record drops to 11-19 and 1-17 in Pac-12 play, while Colorado improves to 17-12, 9-9. Set scores were 26-24, 31-33, 25-20, 22-25 and 10-15.
"We were aggressive in our serving game and were able to keep them under pressure," head coach Mark Barnard said. "We played good defense and put that ball back on them a lot. Our aggressiveness was really good for most of the match."
"Our back row players were just really good today, especially Grace Massey. She was everywhere. Offensively, Amy (Underdown) was good early and Dani (Vargas) had more kills than she's had in her career as well. Maddie Goings started slow early but really picked it up later."
The early portion of the opening set was one of runs. OSU earned the first three points with CU coming right back to tie the score at 3-3. The Beavers used a quick 5-1 run to move up 8-4. The Buffaloes worked their way back taking a lead at 13-12 but OSU had answer with another 5-1 burst fueled by a pair of Amy Underdown kills and back-to-back blocks by Gravley and Maddie Sheehan to go up 17-14. The Buffs came back with six of the next seven points to grab a two-point lead at 20-18. The Beavers evened the score again at 21-21 and continued to keep pressure on eventually securing the opening set, 26-24.
The second set was intense with 23 ties and 10 lead changes. Neither team could gain a lead of more than a single point after OSU was up 16-14. The teams traded sideouts with Colorado serving for the set for the first time at 24-23. The Beavers fought off six sets points and served for the set twice before the Buffs were finally able to get back-to-back kills from Alexa Smith to win the set, 33-31, to even the match.
Oregon State responded in the third set with an early 5-1 flurry to take a lead at 8-5 following a Makenna Browne ace. Colorado would fight back to tie the score at 11-11 but never regained the lead. OSU finished the set on a 7-3 run as Vargas added a pair of kills to help take the set, 25-20.
Colorado took charge of the fourth set early going up 7-2 and opening the lead as far as 19-10. Nevertheless, the Beavers continued to fight on as Gravley ignited the beginning of a comeback with consecutive blocks. Goings and Lindsey Schell each added a pair of kills to close the gap to 22-17. After a couple points by the Buffaloes to make it 24-17, OSU rallied with five straight points before Colorado put away the set, 25-22, to force a fifth game.
Tied at 3-3, the Buffaloes went on a 4-1 run to open a 7-4 lead. That burst turned out to be too much for the Beavers, who couldn't string together consecutive scores after that point. Colorado went on to win the set, 15-10 and the match.
Game Notes: Maddie Goings tallied a team-high 19 kills … senior Daniela Vargas recorded a career-high 13 kills as well … freshman setter registered career-highs in assists with 55 and blocks with eight … Grace Massey tied her career-high with 30 digs.
Next Up: OSU concludes the season next week with a quick trip to Pullman to face Washington State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Beavers then return to Gill Coliseum to host Oregon in the Civil War, brought to you by PacificSource Health Plans, Spirit Mountain Casino, Safeway/Albertsons, Your Local Toyota Dealers and First Interstate Bank, on Saturday at 7 p.m.
