Beavers Shine in Orange & Black Exhibition
November 15, 2018 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State gymnastics team hosted its annual Orange & Black Exhibition Thursday evening. Several hundred fans gathered to get their first impression of the 2019 squad seeking a postseason berth for the 45th straight season.
"They did a good job tonight and showed a lot of promise. We're in a good place right now," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "We have a lot of work to do. We'll work hard at fixing details over the next two months and we'll be ready for the start of the season."
"The freshmen did a good job as well. They competed like veterans. Tonight's experience will be good for them moving forward and that's a huge part of what tonight is all about."
Two gymnasts – Madi Dagen and Kaitlyn Yanish - performed in the all-around while five others appeared on three events including Mariana Colussi-Pelaez, Savanna Force, Mary Jacobsen, Isis Lowery and Kristina Peterson.
In all, 15 out of 21 gymnasts performed in at least one event including two of the Beavers' freshmen who made their Gill Coliseum debuts.
The exhibition featured pairings of head-to-head matchups on each event. The crowd and guest judges then decided which had performed the best routine by indicating the winner with an orange and black card.
For those keeping score, Team Black defeated Team Orange 10-5 including Yanish recording wins on all four of her routines. Colussi-Pelaez, Force and Peterson added a pair of wins for Team Black. The sister combo of Lacy and Madi Dagen along with Maela Lazaro, Niya Mack and Lowery each picked up wins for the Orange squad.
The annual event was a free for fans providing the first public glimpse of the 2019 team inside Gill Coliseum. As has become custom for OSU gymnastics meets, the exhibition ended with a dance party for children from the crowd joining the gymnasts on the floor and then autographs by the entire gymnastics team.
Among the guest judges were OSU head volleyball coach Mark Barnard, strength and conditioning coach Michael Johnson, and baseball undergraduate coach Bill Rowe as well as Travis Teich from KMTR-TV in Eugene. In addition, OSU gymnastics alums Silvia Colussi-Pelaez, Mary Law, Kaytianna McMillan and Taylor Ricci as well as current student-athletes Andrzej Hughes-Murray and Jalen Moore (football), and Destiny Slocum, Jasmine Simmons, Janessa Thropay and Kat Tudor from the women's basketball team helped judge the event.
The Beavers' season opens Jan. 13 when they travel to the Illinois to face the Illini along with Kentucky and Lindenwood in Champaign. OSU's first home meet will be Friday, Jan. 19 with Pac-12 rival, Utah.
The Beavers' season begins Thursday at 7 p.m. with the annual Orange & Black Exhibition at Gill Coliseum. Admission is free.
