Beavers Fall to No. 12 USC in L.A.
October 04, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Oregon State volleyball team fell to No. 12 USC Thursday night at the Galen Center in Los Angeles.
The Beavers, who have been dealing with a slew of injuries of late to 2017 starters Haylie Bennett and Kory Cheshire, lost by scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-21.
"We played well early and in spurts," head coach Mark Barnard said. "Until they had one serving run late in the set, we were right there in it. Ultimately we made too many errors. USC served us hard. They made errors too, but really did a good job of keeping us off balance. Our inability to sustain a good level of play was our undoing. We would get a few points but then make a bad error and give one away. We'll need to be better than that to win games in the Pac-12."
The Beavers came out firing on all cylinders early in the match taking a 9-4 lead in the first set. A trio of early kills by Maddie Goings along with a pair of blocks as well as kills from Maddy Gravley and Lindsey Schell forced a quick USC timeout. The Trojans came back to tie it at 12-12 but OSU refused to back down easily using a two kills from Amy Underdown to pull ahead again at 18-15. However, USC's Khalia Lanier gave the Beavers fits with her strong serve and the Trojans went on a 7-0 run to go up 23-18. USC went on to take the opening set 25-20.
The second set was a different story as the Trojans quickly gained control and grabbed a 10-4 lead. A pair of kills by Gravley sandwiched around a block by Sheehan and Gravley gave the Beavers a 3-0 run to make it 18-12. The Trojans would go on to capture the set 25-18.
In the third set, the score stayed close through the early going with the teams tied as late as 9-9. Following a three-point rally by USC and an OSU timeout, the Trojans would build the lead up to 17-11. Back-to-back-to-back kills by Goings, Gravley and Underdown closed the gap to 17-14. The teams traded sideouts to 22-18 and USC gained its first match point opportunity at 24-19. Goings recorded a kill and Gravley and Sheehan registered a block in a fight to the end, but USC secured the win at 25-21.
"Maddy Gravley had one of her best games tonight. Offensively she was very effective and we did a good job of running out stuff inside all night. Grace Massey did a good job digging as well."
Game Notes: Maddie Goings led the OSU offense with 12 kills, while Maddy Gravley and Amy Underdown added nine kills apiece … Grace Massey recorded 15 digs and Goings just missed a double-double with nine digs … Gravley led the Beavers with four blocks.
Next Up: Oregon State returns to the court Saturday at 7 p.m. to face No. 17 UCLA at Pauley Pavilion.
