Beavers Record Highest Pac-12 Finish in School History
October 26, 2018 | Women's Cross Country
STANFORD, Calif. – The Oregon State cross country team continued its historic season on Friday at the 2018 Pac-12 Cross Country Championships with the highest placing in Pac-12 history for the program at the Stanford Golf Course.
The Beavers had a previous best finish in the Pac-12 of ninth place, but that changed on Friday when OSU ran to a sixth place finish. Oregon State did finish in sixth place one other time in 2008 when the conference was still the Pac-10.
"Today we showed that we had great resiliency and fought extremely hard throughout the race," began head coach Louie Quintana. "It was tough and it was warm, we started slow and we were pretty far back. We had to work so hard to get back to it."
Senior Juliana Mount paced the Beavers for the fourth time this season as the team finished with 173 points; the lowest point total in school history. Oregon (32 points) dethroned three-time defending champion Colorado (48 points) for the overall team title. Stanford (81 points), Washington (123), and UCLA (158) round out the top five.
"It was great to watch us get back in the race and move up to sixth," said Quintana. "We were only 15 points behind UCLA and we can close that gap. We still have some things to improve and we can do that in the next two weeks."
Mount ran her best race at the conference meet in her final attempt finishing an all-conference 14th place overall in 20:11.00. Her previous best finish at the Pac-12 championships was 33rd. Haley Wolf was once again the Beavers second finisher as the freshman crossed the finish line in 33rd place in a time of 20:57.60.
Audrey Lookner had a great performance running her best finish for the Beavers this season. Lookner finished just behind Wolf in 34th place with a time of 20:58.20. Lexi Reed was close behind in 37th place in 21:00.10, Oregon State's fourth runner across the finish line.
The final counting score in the team race came from another freshman, Mari Friedman. Friedman managed a 62nd place finish in her first attempt at the conference meet, running a time of 21:36.10.
Alyssa Foote ran a 21:42.60 for the Beavers in 68th place, while Brigette Takeuchi was close behind in 71st with a time of 21:49.50. Batya Beard (22:21.60) and Rebecca Ledsham (22:48.10) rounded out the field of competition for Oregon State.
"The 6th place finish was the best Pac-12 finish ever and it was our best point total ever at 173," said Quintana. "It was a really solid day, I'm proud of the group and excited for the regional meet!"
