Senior tabbed as one of the top small forwards in the nation
CORVALLIS – Oregon State's Katie McWilliams has been named to the 2019 Cheryl Miller Award Preseason Watch List, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Wednesday.
Â
Named after the three-time Naismith Player of the Year and Class of 1995 Hall of Famer, the annual award in its second year recognizes the top small forward in women's NCAA Division I college basketball.
Â
By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2019 Miller Award will be narrowed to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Miller and the Hall of Fame's selection committee.
Â
McWilliams earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention and Pac-12 Defensive Honorable Mention last season. The senior averaged a team-high 32.7 minutes per game in her junior year, putting up 8.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per contest. The Salem, Ore. native dished out 130 assists last season, the seventh-best total by a junior in program history.
Â
A kinesiology major, McWilliams shot 43.8 percent from 3-point range in 2017-18, the fifth-best percentage in Oregon State history. She has played in 104 games over the course of her career, and has knocked down 102 3-pointers. The senior has proven to be a force in the classroom as well, earning Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team honors last year.
Â
McWilliams will be part of an Oregon State squad that is 116-23 since the start of the 2014-15 season, the seventh-best record in the country, and has won 75 Pac-12 games over that span. The four-highest win totals in program history have all come in the last four years, and the Beavers have been ranked every week over that span.
Â
The Beavers will open the season on Nov. 9 when Cal Poly visits Gill Coliseum. OSU's full schedule is here.
Â
Season tickets for the 2018-19 season are available now. The upcoming year will feature a number of upgrades to Gill Coliseum, highlighted by a center-hung video board. Oregon State will also begin charging for parking next season. For more information on season tickets and the upgrades to Gill Coliseum, click here.
