Beavers to Open Fall Season at Head of the Charles Regatta
October 18, 2018 | Men's Rowing
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State men's rowing team opens the 2018 fall season on Sunday at the 54th annual Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, Mass. This is the third consecutive year for the Beavers rowing at the HOCR, and just the third time since 2012 that OSU has been in attendance.
You can follow the action all weekend long by tuning into the live stream. Results from the Head of the Charles Regatta can be found here.
The Beavers race begins at 10:27 a.m. PT on Sunday, Oct. 21 in the Men's Championship 4+. They are bow No. 5 after placing 4th overall, 3rd collegiately, in 2017.
"The Head of the Charles is the biggest rowing event in the world," began men's rowing head coach Gabe Winkler. "We went through some tight selection with the squad to get this lineup and they should be excited to perform on such a big stage alongside Olympic champions and the best the sport has to offer."
The Beavers are sending a single Varsity 4+ boat, coxed by junior Ben Garrison. Garrison and Roman Pjajka were on the boat that rowed to 4th place in 2017. They are joined in this year's boat by Alex Carlton, Max McDonald and Emerson Chase.
The Head of the Charles holds the crown for the world's largest two-day rowing event, which draws more than 100,000 spectators and more than 10,000 competitors from around the world competing in 51 different race events.
The three-mile head race course takes place on the Charles River. The course runs upstream from the Boston University Boathouse to Christian Herter Park.
OSU head coach Winkler will be racing in the Alumni 8+ on Saturday at 9:56 a.m. PT with the 2008 World Champion lightweight 8+.
