Beavers Move Up At Coeur d’Alene Invitational
September 27, 2017 | Women's Golf
COUEUR D'ALENE, Idaho – The Oregon State women's golf team moved two spots up the leaderboard on Wednesday to finish the Coeur d'Alene Invitational in ninth place.
The Beavers concluded the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a 25-over 295-284-298--877 at the par-71, 6,088-yard Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course to finish ninth in the 18-team field.
"Unfortunately, we didn't capitalize on a scorable course," Oregon State head coach Dawn Shockley said. "We struggled a bit on the greens and really couldn't get a good feel all week."
Junior Haley Nist was the highest Oregon State player on the individual leaderboard, finishing in a tie for 31st place with a 5-over 73-70-75--218. She had a team-high nine birdies over the three rounds and a scoring average of 4.07 on the par-4's, tied for the sixth best in the field.
Freshman Ellie Slama finished in a tie for 40th place with an 8-over 74-68-79--221. The 3-under 68 in the second round is the best of her young college career, bettering the 2-over 74 she carded at the East West Match Play Challenge on Sept. 17 in Madison, Wis.
"Ellie had a solid start to the tournament and will only continue to get better," Shockley said. "Part of becoming a better player is learning from your mistakes, and I know she will.
"Shooting under par like Haley and Ellie did is what we know this team is capable of. We have a few areas to fine tune in order for the scoring we saw in the second round to be a more consistent result for us."
Sophomore Mari Nishiura had the best score of the day for the Beavers in the final round, a 2-over 73, to move 12 spots up the leaderboard and finish in a tie for 45th place with a 9-over 77-72-73--222.
Junior Olivia Benzin and senior Susie Cavanagh both finished in a tie for 54th place with an 11-over 224, as Benzin went 74-74-76 and Cavanagh posted scores of 74-76-74. Benzin had 41 pars in the tourney, tied for the second most in the 90-player field.
Colorado won the team title with an 18-under 834 and the Buffs' Kirsty Hodgkins claimed medalist honors with a 10-under 203.
The Beavers return to action Friday, Oct. 6 through Sunday, Oct. 8 at the Ron Moore Invitational in Denver, Colo.
