Meet The Beavers: Ellie Slama
September 15, 2017 | Women's Golf
Ellie Slama enters Oregon State this season as one of the most-decorated recruits in program history. Ranked 20th in the world by Golf Week, she lettered all four years at South Salem High School and won every league tournament as a sophomore, junior and senior.
Â
Slama was the OSAA 6A Girls' Golf State Champion in 2016 and 2017 and named the Girls' Prep Golfer of the Year by the Oregon Sports Awards and Mid-Valley Sports Awards both years. She graduated high school with a 3.78 GPA and was a member of the National Honor Society and Honor Roll.
Â
Name: Ellie Slama
Â
Year: Freshman
Â
Hometown: Salem, Ore.
Â
Major: Kinesiology
Â
What is your best academic achievement to date?
Making the Honor Roll every semester at South Salem High School.
Â
What do you want to do after you graduate from Oregon State?
Go to graduate school and become a physical therapist
Â
When and where did you start playing golf?
I grew up playing at Salem Golf Club with my dad and brother when I was about 7-years-old. Then I started playing in Oregon Junior Golf events every summer for practice.
Â
Have you ever gotten a hole-in-one? If so, when and where for each?
My first hole-in-one was on the sixth hole at Salem Golf club from 174 yards with a 4-iron in 2015
My second hole-in-one was on the eighth hole at the OGA Course from 150 yards with an 8-iron in 2016
Â
What's your favorite golf course and why?
My favorite golf course is Torrey Pines North Course because of the scenery and prestigious shape the course is in.
Â
Why did you choose to attend Oregon State?
I chose Oregon State because I love the campus, academics and athletics. I also grew up a Beaver fan because both of my parents graduated from OSU.
Â
What do you like best about your teammates?
My teammates are fun spirited, bright and strong-willed. They are not only there to play golf and get better, but also to learn, which I think is very important.
Â
What do you like best about your coaches?
My coaches are so much fun while they also have a plan and practice regimens that will help the team compete at the level we can and have fun doing it.Â
Â
What do you like best about Corvallis?
Corvallis is a cute town that revolves around Oregon State. I love the atmosphere that you can see walking around downtown or the neighborhoods, especially before sporting events.
Â
Who is the most famous person you've played golf with?
I did not play with Annika Sorenstam but I was lucky enough to watch her teach a clinic to me and 55 other girls at her invitational tournament. Other than that I would have to say my golf coach Al Cross is the most famous person I've actually played with.
Â
Who would be in your dream foursome?
Rickie Fowler, Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods
Â
If you could play a different college sport at Oregon State, what would it be and why?
I would swim for the Beavers because I also grew up swimming. I swam in high school and enjoy doing it.
Â
What is your best athletic achievement to date?
I placed as the top American at Junior Worlds at La Costa in 2016
Â
What are your team and individual goals for the season?
My team goal is to make it to Regionals and NCAAs this year. My individual goal is to place in the top 10 in every Pac-1212 event and qualify for NCAAs as well.
