Madrigal has a .979 fielding percentage entering Friday's game
OMAHA, Neb. – Oregon State sophomore Nick Madrigal has earned a Gold Glove Award at second base, as announced Wednesday by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and presented by Rawlings.
Â
Madrigal is the lone underclassman among the nine members of the Division I team, with seven juniors and a senior also recognized. He is also one of two players from the Pac-12 Conference, joining Griffin Canning, a pitcher from UCLA.
Â
Madrigal, who was named the Pac-12's Defensive Player of the Year, holds a .979 fielding percentage this season, splitting time at both second and shortstop. He has committed just five errors in 233 chances.
Â
A native of Elk Grove, Calif., he is the first Oregon State player to named a Gold Glove recipient dating back to 2007.
Â
The honor continues an active postseason for Madrigal, who is a consensus All-American after being named the Pac-12 Player of the Year. He was also named the Pac-12 Player of the Week April 3 and earned conference all-academic honorable mention status as a sociology major.
