Beavers Rally At NCAA Regionals

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Oregon State women's golf team took advantage of a strong back nine at the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Regionals on Tuesday to move three spots up the leaderboard.
The Beavers were 6 over going out but rallied with nine birdies coming in to finish the day with a 5-over 293 at the par-71, 6,593-yard Rawls Course.
The excellent round, which was the seventh best in the field and a 13-stroke improvement from Monday, moved Oregon State into 10th place with a 23-over 306-293--599.
The top six teams will advance to the NCAA National Championships, which will be held May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms, in Sugar Grove, Ill.
The Beavers are seven strokes out of the coveted top six spots with 18 holes to play. Arizona State holds the lead with a 6-under 570, while Texas Tech, Oregon, Furman and Texas round out the top five. Kent State and UCLA are tied for sixth with a 16-over 592.
The final round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 8 a.m. CT (6 a.m. PT) on Wednesday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com. Oregon State will start on the 10th hole at 8 a.m. CT (6 a.m. PT) and be paired with Oklahoma and Iowa State.
Junior Susie Cavanagh continued her strong play, shooting a team-best 1-under 71 that included four birdies and three bogeys. After opening with a 4-over 76, she sits in a tie for 19th place with a 3-over 147. A transfer from UConn, Cavanagh has two career top-20 finishes at Oregon State, a tie for eighth place at the Rose City Collegiate and a tie for 15th at the Pac-12 Preview.
Sophomore Olivia Benzin, who has been the Beavers' most consistent golfer this season, was steady as usual on Tuesday, posting an even-par 72 with two birdies and two bogeys. She's a stroke back of Cavanagh and in a tie for 22nd place with a 4-over 76-72--148.
True freshman Nicole Schroeder had the comeback of the day, as she was 5 over on her front nine before reeling off five birdies and four bogeys on the backside to finish with an even-par 72. The rally moved her 30 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 46th place with an 8-over 80-72--152.
Junior Hannah Swanson is tied for 64th place with an 11-over 76-79--155 and senior Elyse Smidinger carded a 6-over 78 for the second straight day and is tied for 68th with a 12-over 156.
