Beavers Finish Eighth At Pac-12 Championship

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Oregon State women's golf team finished in eighth place at the Pac-12 Championship on Wednesday, equaling its best finish at the conference tournament since 1998.
The Beavers concluded the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a 54-over 317-299-302--918 at the par-72, 6,492-yard Sewailo Golf Club. It was a stroke better than rival Oregon's 55-over 919.
Oregon State will find out Thursday if it earned a trip to the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships. The official announcement will be at 8 a.m. on Golf Channel and streamed live on the Golf Channel website. Seventy-two teams and 24 individuals will be selected to compete at one of four regional championships, each featuring 18 teams and six individuals, May 8-10.
Freshman Nicole Schroeder led the Beavers on the individual leaderboard, finishing in a tie for 22nd place with a 12-over 78-72-78--228. Sophomore Olivia Benzin played better each round and was a stroke back with a 13-over 78-77-74--229 to finish in a tie for 28th place.
Senior Elyse Smidinger bounced back the last two days to finish in a tie for 33rd place with 15-over 80-75-76--231, while junior Susie Cavanagh finished in a tie for 42nd with a 17-over 83-75-75--233 and junior Hannah Swanson wrapped up play with a 27-over 81-85-77--243 for a tie for 51st.
Oregon State also finished eighth at the Pac-10/12 Championship in 2001, 2006, 2013 and 2015. The Beavers finished seventh in 1998 and had its best-ever finish at the conference tournament, sixth place, in 1993.
UCLA won the 11-team event with a 2-under 862, while Colorado finished second (19-over 883) and Stanford finished third (20-over 884). Lilia Vu of UCLA claimed medalist honors with a 7-under 209.
TV coverage of the Pac-12 Championship will debut in a one-hour special on Tuesday, May 2 at 4:30 p.m. on Pac-12 Network.
