Gary Payton II Signs With Milwaukee Bucks

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Former Oregon State standout Gary Payton II signed a multi-year contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, the team announced Sunday.
Payton II played 49 games with the Rio Grande Valley Vipors in the NBA D-League this season. He averaged 14.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals per game, while shooting 49.8 percent from the field.
The Bucks (40-36) host the Dallas Mavericks at 12:30 p.m. PT on Sunday at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in what could be Payton II's NBA debut.
Payton II, a 6-foot-3 guard from Seattle, Wash., earned numerous awards during his two seasons at Oregon State. He was selected to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-District-IX Team, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I All-District 20 Team and named to the All-Pac-12 First Team and All-Defensive Team both years.
He also became the only two-time Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year.
During the 2015-16 season, Payton II led the Beavers to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1990 and its best conference record since 1993 (9-9). He joined Lester Conner (1981-82) as the second Oregon State player in history to lead the Beavers in scoring (16.0), rebounding (7.8), assists (5.0) and steals (2.5).
The lefty broke his father's Oregon State records with 38 consecutive games with a steal and career steals average (2.78). He scored in double figures in 29 of the 32 games during his senior season and posted eight double-doubles, including career highs of 26 points (at Colorado) and 17 rebounds (vs. California).
Oregon State players have been on 11 NBA championship teams, appeared in the NBA Finals 19 times and played in the NBA All-Star Game 13 times. Players who won NBA titles include: Red Rocha (1951), Mel Counts (1965, 1966), Dave Gambee (1967), Lonnie Shelton (1979), A.C. Green (1987, 1988, 2000), Brent Barry (2005, 2007) and Gary Payton (2006).
