No. 1 Beavers Sweep No. 9 Arizona
March 26, 2017 | Baseball
OSU is the first team to sweep the Arizona schools in the same season since Stanford in 1999
Â
With the sweep, Oregon State became the first team to sweep both Arizona and Arizona State in the same season since Stanford in 1999.
Â
The sweep also pushes Oregon State to a 15-game winning streak – the team's longest since the 2013 club went 15-0 to start their season. It's also the nation's longest active streak as the Beavers head to California for a midweek matchup Tuesday at Saint Mary's in Moraga.
Â
The Beavers are 20-1 overall, matching the 1962 team for the best record through 21 games. OSU is also 6-0 in conference play for the first time since the then-Pac-10 unified prior to the 1999 season.
Â
Neither starter worked through the fifth inning. Jake Thompson started for the Beavers, allowing four hits and three runs – two earned – in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked four.
Â
Thompson's counterpart, Rio Gomez, allowed six hits and five runs – three earned – in 3 2/3 innings. He took the loss to drop to 2-3 on the year.
Â
The Beavers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one, with RBI from KJ Harrison, Trevor Larnach and Andy Atwood. Elliott Cary doubled home two in fourth for a 5-0 lead, and after Arizona scored three in the fifth, extended the lead with a run in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Â
Arizona scored four in the eighth but Mitchell Verburg got out of a jam with a four-run lead.
Â
Offense Explodes
Oregon State tallied 15 hits, reaching double figures for the second consecutive game and fourth time in the last five games. Oregon State also tallied double-digit runs for the second time during Pac-12 play, and fifth time this season.
Â
Eisert Key On The Mound
The win went to freshman left-hander Brandon Eisert, who worked 2 1/3 innings, striking out a career-best five. His 49 pitches also marked a season-high as he picked up his first career victory.
Â
Anderson's Big Day
Jack Anderson finished with three hits in the win, setting a career-best. The redshirt junior had previously totaled two hits 13 times, most recently during the series against Ball State. He also batted in the second spot of the order for the first time this season.
Â
And Then, Elliott
Elliott Cary doubled and tripled in the win, driving in three, tying a career-high. Cary last drove in three as a freshman, in 2015, against Stanford.
Â
Jumping On UA Early
The Beavers scored first for the 16th time this season, and second time in the series versus the Wildcats. Oregon State has out-scored its opponents, 28-3, in the first inning in 2017.
Â
Sweep
The sweep of Arizona is the Beavers' first over the Wildcats since 2013 in Tucson, and the first in Corvallis since 1998 when Goss Stadium was known only as Coleman Field.
Â
Next Up
The Beavers travel to California for four games next week. First up is Tuesday at Saint Mary's in Moraga. The Beavers and Gaels will square off at 3 p.m. PT at Louis Guisto Field.
