Beavers Start Strong At Bandon Dunes
March 12, 2017 | Men's Golf
BANDON, Ore. – The Oregon State men's golf team had a strong start to the three-day, 54-hole Bandon Dunes Championship on Sunday.
Â
The Beavers shot a 2-under 286 at the par-72, 6,893-yard Old MacDonald Course and are tied for fifth place in the 16-team field with 36 holes to play.
Â
Oregon fired a 13-under 275 to take an eight-stroke lead to the clubhouse, while Texas Tech and Colorado are tied for second with a 5-under 283, Auburn is fourth with a 4-under 284 and Texas A&M is tied with Oregon State for fifth.
Â
The second round begins at 8:30 a.m. on Monday and live scoring is available at birdiefire.com.
Â
"It was a solid start to the week," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "The weather was about as good as we could ask for today. The forecast is predicting the conditions to get a bit harder the next two days.
Â
"So it will be very important we keep the same mindset. The team who play well will be ready mentally and not allow the conditions or a bad break to get under their skin."
Â
Junior Jonas Liebich and sophomore Trevor Yu both shot a 2-under 70 to lead the Beavers in the opening round and put themselves in a tie for 12th place. Liebich had four birdies and two bogeys, and Yu had an eagle, three birdies and three bogeys. Yu's eagle came on the par-5, 546-yard 17th hole.
Â
Senior Calum Hill dropped in three birdies to finish with an even-par 72, while senior Kevin Murphy carded a 2-over 74 and freshman Shawn Lu finished with a 4-over 76.
Â
Hannes Ronneblad of Texas Tech fired a 7-under 65 for the individual lead through 18 holes.
