Beavers Score 196.825, Fall to Bears
February 18, 2017 | Women's Gymnastics
BERKELEY, Calif. – The Oregon State gymnastics team 'hit' all 24 routines for the second straight week, and fourth time in five meets, and recorded its second-highest score of the season but came up short, falling to No. 18 California Saturday afternoon, 197.075-196.825.
Â
The Beavers' beam team made a final rotation comeback push registering a season-best team score of 49.350 including a near-perfect 9.950 from Madeline Gardiner, to win the event title, and a season-best 9.875 from Silvia Colussi-Pelaez. Despite shaving .125 off the Bears' lead in the final stanza, it was too late.
Â
"I'm really proud of the fight we showed tonight," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "I saw more sticks than we've had recently."
Â
"Silvia (Colussi-Pelaez) had an amazing competition, going in at the last minute on the floor and scoring a 9.875 in her first routine was fantastic. She's been working on that routine for a long time and she really came through for the team in a tough spot."
Â
On the floor exercise, the Beavers were forced to alter the lineup during warm-ups removing Megan Jimenez and Sabrina Gill to insert Mary Jacobsen and Colussi-Pelaez into the top half of the lineup. Colussi-Pelaez, in the first floor routine of her OSU career, posted the team's highest score.
Â
Oregon State led in the early-going scoring 49.300 in the opening rotation on the uneven bars. Shireen Khamedoost scored a season-best 9.850 in the meet's lead-off spot and was eventually tied by Jacobsen. Kaytianna McMillan and Erika Aufiero finished off the rotation with scores of 9.90.
Â
Senior All-Americans Gardiner and McMillan tied for the all-around title with scores of 39.425. OSU's other event winner was Dani Dessaints, who tied for the vault title with a 9.875.
Â
The Beavers are back in the Bay Area next week when they take on Stanford on The Farm, Friday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. on Pac-12 Network.
