Black tops Orange 28-12 in Intrasquad Scrimmage
November 06, 2017 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Redshirt junior Corey Griego won by fall and redshirt senior Izaak Tobin used a technical fall to prevail and lead their respective teams in the annual Orange & Black Intrasquad scrimmage at Gill Coliseum on Monday night.
"It's always good to get out here [Gill Coliseum]," said 12th year head coach Jim Zalesky. "The guys get out here in front of a crowd and it's different than being in a practice room."
In the first of three matches at 149, Tobin got off to a fast start earning bonus points for the Orange squad winning 15-0 by technical fall over redshirt sophomore Alex Rich. Sophomore Kurt Mode won by decision 7-1 over sophomore Conner Noonan in the second match at 149.
Tobin and Mode squared off for the crown at 149 at the end of the heavyweight match with Mode prevailing by decision 7-4.
After missing out most of last season with an injury redshirt freshman Devan Turner used an 8-4 decision over redshirt junior Kegan Calkins to earn the spot at 133.
NCAA experienced redshirt senior Jack Hathaway earned a 7-3 decision over freshman 141-pounder Grant Willits.
"There are some guys who came out and really wrestled hard, I was really impressed with Hunter Willits," said Zalesky. "He has looked good in the practice room and he looked good out here in competition."
Freshman Hunter Willits' major decision over redshirt junior Rodney Williams at 157 put the Orange squad on top temporarily at 12-6. Freshman Aaron Olmos won by decision of Drake McKee at 165 starting a five-match win streak from the Black squad.
At 174 freshman Myles Terry won by major decision over Joe DeMatteo 17-8. Redshirt sophomore 184-pounder Seth McLeod narrowly escaped sophomore Bob Coleman by decision 2-0.
2017 Pac-12 champion Griego had a statement fall over sophomore Adam Rateb 1-minute and 43-seconds into the second period. Redshirt senior Cody Crawford took the heavyweight title with a 5-3 decision over redshirt senior Josh Parazoo. Crawford is one of three Beavers with NCAA experience from a season ago.
No 125-pound match was held.
Oregon State opens the dual season on Thursday, Nov. 9 against Eastern Oregon in Gill Coliseum. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
