November 05, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
BERKELEY, Calif. – The Oregon State volleyball team domianted California through two sets before hanging on to secure the sweep Sunday afternoon. The win marks the seventh straight win for the Beavers over the Bears.
With the victory, OSU advances its record to 17-9 overall and 7-7 in the Pac-12. Cal falls to 13-12, 4-10. The Beavers defeated the Golden Bears by scores of 25-14, 25-21 and 25-23.
It was a close game through the mid-point of the first set with the Beavers leading 14-12. However, a 9-1 run behind the serving of Kayla Ellis and Maddie Goings put the opening set out of reach of the Bears.
In the second set, the Beavers took an early 10-5 lead before Cal stormed back with a four-point run to close the gap to 16-14. Following an OSU timeout, Kory Cheshire recorded back-to-back kills to open the lead to 19-16. The rest of the way, the Beavers registered five kills from five different attackers to secure the set 25-21.
"I thought we really controlled the game in the first and second sets," head coach Mark Barnard said. "But we need to maintain our level of play though, from set to set and match to match."
Cal came out of the intermission firing away taking a 5-1 lead to start the third set. The Beavers worked their way back to tie things at 8-8 after a four-point run. The teams traded sideouts for several points before OSU used another four-point run to open a 21-16 lead that the Beavers would not relinquish.
Mary-Kate Marshall led the Beavers with 15 kills and three aces while Cheshire recorded 10 kills and a team-leading four blocks. Overall, the Beavers recorded a hitting percentage of 42-percent, their best outing since early September.
"Our best area of play tonight was in our attack efficiency. We had very good distribution by Kylee (McLaughlin) on offense."
Game Notes: Sunday's victory marks the Beavers' seventh consecutive win over California … Mary-Kate Marshall recorded 15 kills to lead the Beavers for the 24th time in 26 matches.
Next Up: Oregon State returns to action next week when the Beavers travel to the desert to face Arizona on Thursday and Arizona State on Saturday. The match on Thursday will be televised on Pac-12 Oregon and Pac-12 Arizona.
