October 25, 2017 | Women's Cross Country
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State cross country is teeming with excitement as the Pac-12 Cross Country Championships draw near. This Friday, Oct. 27 the 32nd edition of the women's Pac-12 cross country championship takes place at Springfield Golf Club in Springfield, Ore.
"There is a lot of good energy heading into this weekend," started head coach Louie Quintana. "We know that we can compete loose and free and have fun with it. The training has gone extremely well, I know that the women are really confident and eager to run in their home state."
Â
For the first time in event history, the championship event will be broadcast live on Friday, Oct. 27 beginning at 11 a.m. Both the women's and men's races will air live nationally on Pac-12 Network as well as across all six Pac-12 regional channels. The events will also be available to stream live on Pac-12.com. On the call will be Jim Watson, Dwight Stones and Lewis Johnson
Â
With a maximum allotment of 10 entries per team Oregon State is projected to field just that; graduate student Colette Richter, seniors Holly Cavalluzzo and Kala Kopecek; juniors Nicole Goecke, Sam McKinnon, Juliana Mount; sophomores Emily Bacon, Greta Van Calcar; freshmen Rebecca Ledsham, Audrey Lookner.
Â
Mount has been the Beavers number one runner all season long. With two top-five finishes and a 16th placing at the star-studded Dellinger Invitational, the junior looks to have her biggest impact yet.
Â
"She's tremendously important," began Quintana. "Not only is she a leader on the course, but she is always rallying the girls on a daily basis in practice. She is the quintessential front runner that any coach could ask for."
Â
The women's 6,000-meter race will be held first and begins at 11:10 a.m., followed by the men's 8,000-meter race at 12:10 a.m.
Â
Oregon State is no stranger to running at Springfield Golf Club, the Beavers ran in the Dellinger Invite which was held at the golf club on Sept. 29. The course is made up of entirely grass and is mostly on the fairways. It consists of two relatively flat loops – an outer loop and a finish loop. The outer loop is approximately 2,320 meters in length, and the finishing loop is approximately 1,350 meters in length.
Â
Out of the 12 teams in the conference a total of 10 are ranked in the USTFCCCA Region Rankings, including five of which are nationally ranked. Aside from Oregon State, Oregon (1st West Region), Colorado (1st Mountain Region), Washington (4th West Region), Stanford (5th West Region), Utah (6th Mountain Region), California (6th West Region), Arizona (7th West Region), Arizona State (9th West Region) and UCLA (10th West Region) are all regionally ranked.
Â
Oregon is also ranked first in the NCAA with Colorado grabbing the third ranked spot. Washington (13th), Utah (27th) and California (28th) complete the Pac-12 teams ranked nationally.
Â
"The girls are prepared to race at a very high level and at a very fast pace," said Quintana. "I've been very encouraged by what I've seen over the last six to eight weeks of work, they are ready for this."
Â
