Oregon State Cross Country Takes Third at Bronco Invitational
October 14, 2017 | Women's Cross Country
SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Oregon State cross country had another strong outing at the Bronco Invitational on Saturday morning. The Beavers, led by junior Juliana Mount, took third place out of 28 teams.
Â
"I thought we got off to a slow start as we got pinched at the start of the race," said head coach Louie Quintana. "We did a lot of good work to get back into the race and we had some girls step up this week which was big for us."
Â
Mount paced the Beavers and crossed the finish line of the 6,000-meter course at Baylands Regional Park in 20:36.3, taking third place overall for her highest finish of the season. She was 18 seconds behind the first place finisher.
Â
Senior Holly Cavalluzzo had her second top-10 finish of the season, crossing the finish line in 20:44.4.
Â
"Holly had a big race for us, we needed her to run well and she did just that," said Quintana. "Greta (Van Calcar) and Collette (Richter) also ran great for the team today."
Â
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day was sophomore Greta Van Calcar who finished 30th overall, but was the Beavers' third best time in just her second race of her Oregon State career. Van Calcar finished the 6,000-meter race in 21:16.9.
Â
Graduate Colette Richter was right on the heels of Van Calcar, crossing the finish line in 21:17.7 in 31st place overall. The Beavers final counting score was redshirt junior Nicole Goecke who's time of 21:23.9 was good enough for 39th place.
Â
Freshman Audrey Lookner (21:33.2, 48th), senior Kala Kopecek (21:36.9, 52nd), freshman Rebecca Ledsham (21:37.7, 54th), junior Sam McKinnon (21:51.6, 64th), junior Gwyneth McMorris (22:15.2, 89th), and sophomore Emily Bacon (22:47.2, 124th) rounded out OSU's other runners.
Â
"Not everyone was feeling their best today, and that is going to happen throughout the season," said Quintana. "We will be ready for a big challenge in two weeks at the Pac-12 Championship.
Â
"It's easily the deepest conference in the country, and we will be ready to go."
