FORT COLLINS, Colo. – It was an impressive start to the 2016-17 season for the Oregon State women's golf team, as they rallied late to finish in fourth place at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic on Tuesday.
Â
The Beavers shot an 11-over 299 in the final round at the par-72, 6,364-yard Ptarmigan Country Club and finished the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a 27-over 298-294-299--891.
Â
San Jose State ran away with the team title, posting a 7-over 871, while UC Irvine (21-over 885) and Gonzaga (25-over 889) finished just ahead of Oregon State in the 17-team field.
Â
"Overall, it was a solid start to the season and good momentum for our next event in Portland," Oregon State head coach Dawn Shockley said. "I'm extremely proud of Olivia and her consistent play."
Senior Elyse Smidinger and sophomore Olivia Benzin both had two birdies and three bogeys in the final round to finish with a team-best 1-over 73.
Â
Benzin posted her second career top-10 finish, shooting a 3-over 71-75-73--219, to finish in 10th place. The Tacoma, Wash., native finished seventh at the Rose City Collegiate last season in just her second collegiate event.
Â
Smidinger, who sat out last season after transferring from the University of Denver, had a strong debut for Oregon State, as she improved each round to finish in a tie for 19th place with an 8-over 77-74-73--224. She had nine birdies over the two days, the second most on the team.
Â
Haley Nist finished in a tie for 23rd place with a 9-over 78-72-75--225 for her sixth career top-25 finish. A year after setting the program's single-season scoring average record (74.43), Nist started her junior campaign with a team-best 10 birdies over the three rounds.
Â
Junior Hannah Swanson and freshman Nicole Schroeder each shot a 16-over 232 to finish in a tie for 47th place. Swanson posted scores of 75-79-78, while Schroeder carded 75-73-84 in her first collegiate tournament.
Â
My Leander of San Jose State claimed medalist honors with a 6-under 68-70-72--210, one stroke better than Ciera Min of Gonzaga, who finished with a 5-under 73-70-68--211.
Â
The Beavers have two weeks off before returning to action on Monday, Sept. 25 and Tuesday, Sept. 26 at the Rose City Collegiate in Aurora, Ore.
