FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Oregon State women's golf team had a solid start to its 2016-17 season on Monday and sits in fifth place through 36 holes at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic.
Â
The Beavers shot a 10-over 298 in the morning round at the par-72, 6,364-yard Ptarmigan Country Club and followed that with a 6-over 294 in the afternoon to put them in fifth in the 17-team field.
Â
The final round of the two-day, 54-hole tournament will begin at 8 a.m. MT (7 a.m. PT) on Tuesday and live scoring is available at birdiefire.com.
Â
"I'm really happy with the way we managed the golf course and battled until the end," Oregon State head coach Dawn Shockley said. "I'm looking forward to a few more of our putts falling tomorrow."
Â
Olivia Benzin started her sophomore campaign in impressive fashion, firing a 1-under 71 in the morning for her second career sub-par round. She followed that with a 3-over 75 after the lunch break to put her in a tie for 13th place.
Â
A native of Tacoma, Wash., Benzin carded a 2-under 70 in the third round at last year's Rose City Collegiate to finish in a career-best seventh place. She capped a sensational season with the best scoring average by a freshman in program history (75.43).
Â
True freshman Nicole Schroeder had a strong start in her first collegiate tournament, shooting a 4-over 75-73--148. The Rocklin, Calif., native had five birdies in the first round and three in the second to help her sit in a tie for 22nd place.
Â
Junior Haley Nist, who set the Oregon State single-season scoring average record last season (74.43), started with a 6-over 78 but bounced back in the second round with an even-par 72 to climb into a tie for 29th place. It's the ninth time in her career she's shot an even par or better score.
Â
Senior Elyse Smidinger, who sat out last season after transferring from the University of Denver, also improved in the second round to finish the day with a 7-over 77-74--151 and a tie for 34th place.
Â
Junior Hannah Swanson is tied for 46th place with a 10-over 75-79--154.
Â
My Leander of San Jose State holds the clubhouse lead with a 6-under 68-70--138, two shots better than teammate Franziska Friedrich and Gonzaga's Bianca Pagdanganan, who both shot a 4-under 140.
