Haavik Scores, but Beavers Fall to Eagles
September 11, 2016 | Women's Soccer
YPSILANTI, Mich. – Senior Helene Haavik scored her fourth goal of the season, but it was not enough for the Oregon State women's soccer team, as the Beavers fell to Eastern Michigan 2-1 Sunday morning in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
Haavik, who also scored two goals in the Beavers' win over Michigan State on Friday, found the net in the fifth minute. She finished the match with two shots. Junior Natalie Higgins tallied three shots and an assist.
The Beavers (3-2-2) would continue to create chances throughout the first half after taking the early lead. Junior Emma Jones, Higgins, sophomore Toni Malone and freshman Nicole Nickerson all took aim at the target in search of a second goal, but the EMU (2-2-2) defense was able to hold firm. Junior goalkeeper Bella Geist made a pair of saves in the opening 45 minutes to keep the Eagles off the board.
Eastern Michigan leveled the score less than two minutes into the second half. Oregon State would respond with a shot from Nickerson almost immediately, but the effort was saved. The teams would trade chances over the next 20 minutes, with Haavik, junior Kayla Latham and sophomore Allison Pantuso taking shots for the Beavers.
The Eagles scored their second goal in the 85th minute. The Beavers made a late push to force overtime, but could not level the score.
Oregon State will be back at Lorenz Field on Friday when they play host to in-state rival Portland.
