Beavers battle Gophers in opener

Minnesota rallies for 30-23 victory
Minneapolis, Minn. – Quarterback Darell Garretson threw for three touchdowns and 228 yards in his first start but Oregon State fell to Minnesota 30-23 on Thursday night.
The Beavers (0-1) led early in the fourth quarter but the Gophers rallied for two touchdowns to escape with the victory before a crowd of 44,852 at TCF Bank Stadium.
Garretson hooked up with H back Noah Togiai on a 6-yard scoring pass in the first quarter and a 30-yard TD pass to Victor Bolden in the second quarter.
His third TD, a 12-yarder to running back Tim Cook, gave the Beavers a 23-17 lead with 2:30 remaining in the third quarter. However, Minnesota drove the field and finished two drives in the fourth quarter.
OSU got the ball back at its 27-yard line with 1:27 remaining, needing a touchdown and conversion to tie. It could not make a first down, though, and Minnesota ran out the clock.
Garretson completed 25 of 40 attempts for 228 yards, without an interception. Running back Ryan Nall rushed for 71 yards on 13 carries and led OSU receivers with eight catches for 80 yards.
Wide receiver Seth Collins had five catches for 57 yards, Bolden five for 32 yards and Togiai four for 31. Inside linebacker Manase Hungalu and cornerback Xavier Crawford led the defense with eight tackles each; cornerback Treston Decoud and safety Devin Chappell had seven apiece.
The Beavers open their home season against Idaho State at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17. The game will be televised by Pac-12 Networks.
