Beavs in Bend Day Three -- De-Striped
August 07, 2016 | Football
Another spectacular day at Summit High School for the third day of practice. By the way, Summit is the first high school with an artificial playing surface east of the Cascade Mountains in the state.
Arguably the highlight of the day was freshman Art Pierce being de-striped by sophomore running back Ryan Nall following practice. The first-year players, who did not participate in spring practice, have an orange stripe on the crown of their helmets. When their veteran "big brother" indicates to the coaching staff that the newcomer has proven to be a committed teammate, the strip is removed in front of the entire squad.
"It's a rite passage in our program that the newcomers prove themselves to their teammates and coaches," Beaver head coach Gary Andersen said.

Sunday marked the first day in shoulder pads for "fall camp." The five-day acclimatization period ends on Tuesday, which is also the first day of full pads. On the horizon is the first two-a-day of camp (Wednesday) before the team packs up and heads back to campus Thursday.
Here is a great read authored by The Oregonian's Gina Mizell on the challenges of moving the entire football team from Corvallis to Bend.
Family Fun Day returns to the preseason schedule Friday, August 12, beginning at 5 p.m. with the first scrimmage of August's camp.
