Competition Heats Up in Second Scrimmage

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State football team its held second, and final, scrimmage of the fall Thursday morning in front of a smattering of fans at Reser Stadium.

The 47-play scrimmage featured many younger players as coaches look to clarify the depth chart ahead of the Beavers' season opener two weeks from today.

Senior Tim Cook and true freshman Artavis Pierce continued their duel for the top back up spot at running back. Cook toted the ball eight times for 40 yards while Pierce had six carries for 46 yards and a touchdown.

The back-up quarterback competition continues between sophomore Marcus McMaryion and true freshman Mason Moran. McMaryion led a methodical scoring drive in the first "drive it" period and finished the practice 5-8 for 67 yards. Moran showed off his mobility with a pair of carries for 31 yards during limited time in which stats were kept.

During red zone drills, McMaryion connected on a deep ball with Hunter Jarmon for a touchdown after the ball caromed off linebacker Bright Ugwoegbu.

Meanwhile, junior transfer Kyle White changed sides of the ball on Thursday moving from running back to safety.

The Beavers' also spent a large chunk of time working on special teams where junior kicker Garrett Owens connected on four-out-of-six field goals, splitting the uprights from 40, 43, 46 and 49 yards.

Oregon State opens the season Thursday, September 1 at Minnesota at 6 p.m. PDT in a game that will be televised by the Big Ten Network. The seven-game home schedule starts Saturday, September 17 against Idaho State at 2 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.
