"Young Guys" Make Case for Playing Time
August 12, 2016 | Football
CORVALLIS – Starting quarterback Darell Garretson connected on 10 of 16 passes for 95 yards and scored a rushing touchdown as Oregon State held its first scrimmage of the "fall camp" Friday night at Reser Stadium.
  Â
Garretson, a junior who redshirted last season after transferring from Utah State, led the first team on a 6-play 70-yard scoring drive that was highlighted by a 41-yard pass to receiver Jordan Villamin. He capped off the drive with a five-yard touchdown run.
"Darell has a good grasp and when things aren't going his way he stays Steady Eddie, so his ability to hang in there in the huddle, stay confident and poised and in a position to manage the team was big today," OSU head coach Gary Andersen said.
The 57-play scrimmage displayed the Beavers' increased athleticism and depth, particularly on offense. Seth Collins, essentially, made his debut at receiver. The former quarterback made a scrimmage-high five grabs for 76 yards, including an acrobatic 38-yard snare early in the drills.
The offense for the evening scored three touchdowns, the other two were posted by Paul Lucas on a 10-yard scamper and Art Pierce for three yards in red-zone drills. Â The defense created one turnover when starting cornerback Treston Decoud intercepted Mason Moran.
Pierce is one of several young players seeking first-time game action this year, including possible starting roles. However, a majority of the young crew who could see action reside on the defensive side of the ball.
"They're not afraid to take hard coaching," Andersen said. "They've worked extremely hard through camp. They're definitely drinking out of the fire hose right now, but hopefully the waters are settling a little bit as we go through time. They're good looking kids. You look at them and say 'yea that's what they're supposed to look like.' They've come in and competed hard."
For the day the offense, missing starting lineman Sean Harlow and receiver Victor Bolden, Â generated 301 yards. Harlow is recuperating from a season-ending injury from a year ago while Bolden is nursing a minor injury suffered last week at Summit High School in Bend.
Oregon State returns to the practice field Saturday in preparation for the final scrimmage Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Reser Stadium – open to the public.
