Wednesday has brought another big day in the early season for the Beavers. The weather, as we've become accustomed is fantastic with the high temperature expected to be 79 degrees and there is hardly a cloud in the sky.
Â
Today marks is the first double-day of the year and our final practices in Bend. Coaches opted for a relatively short practice in helmets and shorts this morning with what is expected to be a more intense and longer session this evening.
Â
The early practice emphasized situational execution, with time devoted to red zone and backed-up situations as well as special teams and included practice subbing personal at high speed during a high tempo portion of practice.
Â
Senior safety Devin Chappell turned in the play of the day (or at least of the morning practice) intercepting a long pass that had been deflected by Treston Decoud. It's hard to consider it a pick six, since the whistle blew and he was one of two players to play through the return. Had it been a live play offensive tackle Dustin Stanton may have steamrolled him at the goal line and, no doubt, would have been screaming his personal motto, "Feels Good."
Â
The Beavers wrap up their time in Bend tonight packing up and bussing home to Corvallis in the morning. We would like to recognize the Bend community for supporting us, Central Oregon Community College for housing and feeding us, and Summit High School for the use of this fantastic facility.
Â
While the team won't head over the mountains until morning, the majority of the support staff (video personnel, athletic trainers, equipment coordinators) will be headed home to begin preparing for the arrival of the Beavers so keep an eye out for a caravan of trucks and vans this evening in the Santiam pass.
Â
The Beavers will have Thursday off as they return to the valley, but return to practice for their second double-day on Friday.
Family Fun Day returns to the preseason schedule Friday, August 12, beginning at 5 p.m. with the first scrimmage of August's camp. The scrimmage will end at approximately 7 p.m., followed by an autograph session and the movie "Remember The Titans," sponsored by Paventy and Brown Orthodontics. Family Fun Day is free of charge and located at Reser Stadium. In addition, OSU Athletics will hold an open tryout for national anthem singers prior to Family Fun Day. Prospective anthem singers can perform at Reser Stadium 2:30-4:30 p.m.
In addition to the Family Fun Day festivities, Pac-12 Network will be in Reser Stadium on the 12th for its annual Training Camp visit to OSU. The show will air that night with a special viewing party at Sky High Brewing in downtown Corvallis, from 8-10 p.m., with Network personalities Mike Yam and Yogi Roth. There will be giveaway items and the opportunity to win Beaver football tickets.
Oregon State will hold their final public access scrimmage Thursday, August 18 at 10:30 a.m. at Reser Stadium.
The Beavers open the season Thursday, September 1 at Minnesota at 6 p.m. PDT in a game that will be televised by the Big Ten Network. The seven-game home schedule starts Saturday, September 17 vs. Idaho State at 2 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.
