CORVALLIS, Ore. – Joey Petschl (pronounced pet-chull), who was an assistant coach at Saint Martin's University the past two seasons, will join the Oregon State men's basketball program as the director of player personnel, Beaver head coach Wayne Tinkle announced Thursday.
“I'm excited to bring Joey on our staff,” Tinkle said. “He was with us for six years at Montana and part of three championships so he knows what it takes to get it done. He's a loyal worker and will be a tremendous asset, not only to our program but also to Oregon State University.”
Petschl, 26, worked under Tinkle for six seasons at the University of Montana. He was a student manager for four years, a graduate assistant in 2012-13 and the director of basketball operations in 2013-14. While at Montana, the Grizzlies won three Big Sky Conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times.
“There are no better people to work for and work with than Coach Tinkle and his staff,” Petschl said. “During my time at Montana I got to understand what he is all about as a coach, person and mentor. I could not be more excited to be working for him again. I am very loyal to Coach Tinkle and love what he stands for. My level of excitement to be back with Coach Tinkle is through the roof and I cannot wait to get to work.”
Petschl helped build Saint Martin's from a 6-22 record to a 15-13 mark and a sixth-place finish in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in his two years with the Saints.
He earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Montana in 2012 and a master's degree in adult training from the University of Phoenix in 2016. He graduated from Bishop Blanchet High School in Seattle in 2008.
Petschl and his wife, Devin, are both natives of Seattle. He is the son of Joe and Lisa Petschl and has four brothers, Zach, Sam, Greg and Jeff.
