Collins, Ausman set records

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State track & field team set two more school records and won three events on Saturday on Day 2 of the High Performance Meet at the Whyte Track & Field Center.
Junior Devin Collins broke a 19-year-old school mark in the 400 hurdles to bookend her existing school record in the 100 hurdles. Junior Melissa Ausman broke her three-week-old record in the discus. Each took first place.
Senior Sara Almen claimed the high jump with her best effort since her freshman year. And another Beaver, redshirting senior Kara Hallock, won the long jump as an unattached competitor.
The Beavers also posted three other all-time top-10 times or marks on a sunny, breezy afternoon at the fourth annual edition of OSU's premier home track & field event.
“It was a great weekend,” coach Kelly Sullivan said. “The fact we are still setting school records and posting top-10 performances this late in the season illustrates our progress and improvement and the dedication and commitment of our women.”
Collins ran 58.64 in the 400 hurdles to shatter the old mark of 59.72, set by Jenna Stark in 1987. Sophomore Kerissa D'Arpino was second in 1:00.71, the fourth-fastest time ever in that event.
Ausman unleased a throw of 176-10.75 on her fifth attempt to surpass her old mark of 173-7, set at the April 9 Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Senior Rachel Picknell took fifth in 153-5.50, the No. 4 all-time mark.
Almen cleared 5-9.25 on her final attempt at the height. Her career best is 5-10, set twice in 2013 as a freshman.
Hallock (19-1.25) edged teammate Jasmin McKenzie (18-10.75) in the long jump. Hallock also was third in the 100 hurdles in 14.21, which would have been the No. 5 all-time clocking had she not been redshirting.
Venessa D'Arpino was seventh in the 100 in 12.06, the No. 7 all-time clocking. Redshirting sophomore Saskia McNairy was fourth in the long jump in 18-7, which would have been the No. 8 all-time mark had she not been competing unattached.
Seniors Michele Turney (38-10.50) and Bethany Imperial (38-3.50), the only Beavers to break 39 feet in the triple jump, went 3-5 in that event.
Redshirt freshman Alba Villaronga ran 14.75 in the 100 hurdles, the No. 9 all-time clocking in that event. It was her first time under 15 seconds since resuming competition several weeks ago after recovering from a foot injury that forced her to redshirt in 2015. She has a 13.61 PR.
On Friday, Picknell broke her school hammer record and took third with a heave of 173-4.50 in an event held at Western Oregon. She set her old mark of 169-4 at the Sun Angel Classic.
The Beavers have set 13 school records and have posted 48 all-time top-10 times or marks since starting the outdoor campaign at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Invitational on March 19.
Also on Saturday, OSU Director of Operation Geena Gall set a meet/track record by winning the 400 in 56.08.
The meet was also scored as a dual. OSU defeated Oregon 294-85; defeated Eastern Washington 290-222; defeated Portland State 282-196; defeated Seattle 302-109; defeated Portland 298-108; defeated Nevada 307-92, and defeated Utah 315-31.
OSU will send an undetermined number of competitors to the Oregon Twilight Meet on Friday. It is the final competition before the Pacific-12 Conference Championships, set for May 14-15 at Seattle.
