Haun wins pole vault at HPM
April 30, 2016 | Women's Track & Field
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Junior Helen Ann Haun tied her career best and won the pole vault and the middle distance runners shined to lead the Oregon State track & field team on the opening day of the High Performance Meet at the Whyte Track & Field Center.
Haun cleared 12-3.50 to take first place in the pole vault, matching the career-best she set at the Sun Angel Classic on April 9. Gillette Field (11-9.75) was fourth and Annie Sidor (11-3.75) was seventh to give the Beavers a strong start at the fourth annual meet, OSU's lone home competition of the season.
The Beavers also fared well in the 1500 meters, where Morgan Anderson (4th, 4:24.95), Juliana Mount (6th, 4:26.53), Kristiane Width (8th, 4:31.96) and Emily Weber (9th, 4:32.14) all placed in the top nine.
Mount PRed by nearly four seconds in the No. 4 time in school history. Width PRed for the third time this spring, by nearly two seconds, and Weber improved her season-best by more than two seconds.
In the 5000, Samantha Lewis third among collegiate runners and seventh overall at 17:07.54. She sliced 19 seconds off her season-best with a clocking nearly one minute faster than her PR entering the season.
“It was an outstanding opening day and I thought we competed very well,” OSU coach Kelly Sullivan said. “Our 1500 group exceled, Sam Lewis had a breakthrough race and Helen Ann got us off to a great start in tough conditions,” as the runway was not completely dry, thanks to mid-afternoon showers that delayed the pole vault by nearly an hour.
“I'm looking forward to more good things on Saturday,” when competition resumes at 10 a.m. with the javelin. “The weather will be nicer and more conducive to top performances.”
Saturday's running events start at 1 p.m.
The Beavers have set 10 school records and have posted 40 all-time top-10 times or marks since starting the outdoor campaign at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Invitational on March 19.
One meet/track record was set on Friday. Oregon's Brianna Nerud won the 3,000-steeplechaseas in 10:15.23; Julia Webb of the Bowerman Track Club set the old mark of 10:18.37 in 2014.
The hammer was held at Western Oregon; results were not available.
