Beavers At Midway Point of Pac-12 Championship
April 30, 2016 | Men's Golf
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Oregon State men's golf team is in 10th place after playing 36 holes on Friday at the 57th Annual Pac-12 Championship.
The Beavers shot a 26-over 371-365--736 at the par-71, 7,209-yard Country Club to open the three-day, 72-hole tournament.
No. 4 Stanford (22-under 688), No. 1 3 California (17-under 693) and No. 2 USC (6-under 704) all finished in red figures to hold down the top three spots at the midway point of the conference championship.
“The one thing about the Pac-12 Championship is it is 6-count-5 over four rounds,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “Through 36 holes we still have 10 more counting rounds, which is almost equal to a regular event. In this format it is much easier to pick up strokes, and with the weather predicted the next two days, we just have to keep competing.
“We are playing for a chance to go to the NCAA Regionals. We can't hold back. We have to go get it.”
Junior Calum Hill played well in his first Pac-12 Championship, shooting a 1-over 73-70--143, to put him in a tie for 26th place.
Junior Conner Kumpula is tied for 33rd place with a 3-over 73-72--145 and senior Chris Tedesco is a stroke back with a 4-over 74-72--146 for a tie for 36th.
Junior Kevin Murphy opened the tourney with a 6-over 75-73--148, sophomore Jonas Liebich finished the day with a 13-over 76-79--155 and senior Tyler Carlson posted a 15-over 79-78--157.
The third round will begin at 9 a.m. PT on Saturday with tee times off the first and 10th holes. Live scoring and pairings are available at golfstat.com.
Pac-12 Networks will air coverage of the championships on Sunday, May 8 at 10 a.m. PT. Greg Heister and Kay Cockerill will call the action.
