Amity star McShane signs LOI
April 19, 2016 | Women's Track & Field
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Amity High School standout Lindsay McShane has signed a letter of intent to join the Oregon State track & field team for the 2016-17 season.
She is one of Oregon's best prep throwers and has the top marks in the shot put (42-5) and discus (143-8), and the No. 2 mark in the javelin (135-0) in Class 3A this season.
Her lifetime bests are 144-7 in the discus and 141-1 in the javelin, set in 2015, when she captured repeat 3A state championships in the discus and shot put. She also placed fourth in the javelin in 2014 and third in 2015.
McShane holds the Amity school records in the shot put, discus and javelin, and was the McMinnville News-Register newspaper's Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year in 2014 and 2015.
She also throws the hammer, which is not contested in high school in Oregon. Her lifetime best in that event is 129-0.
“She is one of the premier throwers in the West,” OSU coach Kelly Sullivan said. “She is another piece in a continually-improving event area for us. She is a multiple-thrower, and has a ton of upside.
“She is a great athlete, and did all sports in high school, which we love. Lindsay and her family are excited about coming to Oregon State. She's a great student; those are the kids you love to find and she is a perfect fit for us.
“She had a lot of great options. It's always great to get a top in-state kid.”
McShane told the News-Register newspaper that she also had offers from Oregon, Stanford, Cornell, Hawaii and other schools. However, her father, AHS girls basketball coach Reg McShane, and other relatives are OSU graduates and she grew up a Beavers fan.
She said OSU junior Melissa Ausman, a former prep opponent, paid a big role in her decision. Ausman was her guide during her official visit to campus last October.
“She was really welcoming and just a great person,” McShane said of Ausman, OSU's school record-holder in the discus. “She's kind of like my idol.”
McShane will join fall cross country/track signees Brooke Chuhlantseff of West Salem High School in Salem, Ore.; Sara Christianson of Borah High School in Boise; Emily Mackay of Union-Endicott High School in Endicott, N.Y.; Lexi Reed of D 'Evelyn High School in Denver, and Mikayla Sodersten of Clovis High School in Fresno on the 2017 OSU track team.
