Calum Hill Leads Beavers On Day Two At El Macero

EL MACERO, Calif. – Calum Hill fired an even-par 72 to lead the Oregon State men's golf team in the second round of the El Macero Classic on Saturday.
The Beavers shot an 11-over 299 in the middle round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament and are in a tie for fourth place in the 15-team field with 18 holes to play. Texas Tech (10-over 586) is first, TCU (16-over 592) is second, UC Davis is (23-over 599)is third and Marquette is tied with Oregon State with a 26-over 602.
The final round will begin at 7 a.m. on Sunday with tee times off the first and 10th holes. Live scoring and pairings are available at golfstat.com.
“While the wind was down, the greens were a little faster and much firmer today, which made the course still very difficult,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “Two or three loose shots really cost us as a team. While not the result we wanted today, these guys are giving it everything they have.”
Hill, a junior transfer from the University of Louisiana-Monroe, had four birdies, 10 pars and four bogeys at the par-72, 6,912-yard El Macero Country Club to finish with a 72. He is in a tie for 10th place through 36 holes with a 5-over 77-72-149.
Junior Kevin Murphy is tied for sixth place, and only five strokes out of the lead, after shooting a 2-over 74 for the second straight day. Ryan Books of TCU holds the clubhouse lead with a 2-under 142, while Ivan Ramirez of Texas Tech and Paul Barjon of TCU are tied for second with an even-par 144, Federico Zucchetti of Texas Tech is fourth with a 1-over 145 and Hurly Long of Texas Tech is fifth with a 3-over 147.
Senior Tyler Carlson was 8 over through 11 holes but didn't give up, as he dropped in three birdies in the final seven holes to shoot a 5-over 77. His 8-over 75-77--152 is tied for 30th place.
Junior Conner Kumpula is tied for 50th place with an 11-over 77-78--155 and sophomore Jonas Liebich is tied for 68th with a 13-over 81-76--157.
“It was awesome to see what Tyler Carlson did on the back nine after a front nine he would soon like to forget,” Reehoorn said. “The closing birdies by him and Calum Hill were huge. His fight at the end could be the difference between a place or two tomorrow.
“The winds are predicted to be down tomorrow and I'm confident our guys will be ready to play a great round. They are all very close.
Senior Chris Tedesco, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 41st place with a 9-over 79-74--153.
