Garretson, Togiai, Villamin shine at spring game
April 16, 2016 | Football
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Junior quarterback Darell Garretson threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns and receivers Noah Togiai and Jordan Villamin each cracked the 100-yard barrier on Saturday to lead the offense at the Oregon State spring football game.
A transfer from Utah State who redshirted in 2015, Garretson completed 21 of 32 passes to a variety of receivers. He teamed up with Villamin for scoring plays covering 43 and 24 yards, and ended the game with a 9-yard TD strike to freshman Trevon Bradford to finish a special two-minute drill on the final possession of the game.
A sophomore, Togiai led all receivers with seven catches for 107 yards. His one-handed, 23-yard reception from Garretson set up the ensuing scoring pass to Bradford, a former Oregon City standout who graduated early from high school to participate in spring practice.
The teams played two 15-minute quarters and an abbreviated second half. The game was played using special scoring rules and the White team (offense) edged the defense (Black team), 54-51.
The offense started quickly as Garretson and Villamin teamed up for a 43-yard scoring play on the first possession. He and Villamin later combined on the 24-yard scoring play in the second quarter.
Junior Kyle White, a transfer from Orange Coast CC, led all rushers with 53 yards on 10 carries. He scored the lone rushing TD on an 8-yard play set up by Garretson's 33-yard completion to Villamin.
Sophomore cornerback Dwayne Williams returned an interception 46-yards for a touchdown for the Black team. Garrett Owens concluded the first half with a 43-yard field goal, the only one attempted.
The Beavers open the 2016 season at Minnesota on Thursday, Sept. 1. They begin the seven-game home schedule in new-look Reser Stadium against the Idaho State Bengals on Saturday, Sept. 17.
