Beavers In Second Place After Opening Round
April 15, 2016 | Men's Golf
EL MACERO, Calif. – The Oregon State men's golf team had a solid start to the El Macero Classic on Friday, despite 20 to 30 mile-per-hour wind gusts, to put them in contention after the first 18 holes of competition.
The Beavers shot a 15-over 303 at the par-72, 6,900-yard El Macero Country Club and are in second place in the 15-team field with 36 holes to play.
Texas Tech leads after firing a 3-over 291, while TCU and UC Davis are tied for third with a 16-over 304 and Marquette rounds out the top five with a 19-over 307.
The second round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Live scoring and pairings are available at golfstat.com.
“A solid start for the guys today,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “I think we've played every round since the start of Bandon Dunes in early March in 20-plus mile-per-hour winds. It has been really tough and each time out we've gotten better at handling the conditions and just embracing the challenge.
“There are a few things we need to clean up, but most importantly, we need to be ready and confident to shoot some good scores tomorrow. It's likely the winds die down. If that happens, it will be the first time in a while we will really have a chance to post a low score.”
Junior Kevin Murphy birdied the par-4 18th hole to help him shoot a team-best 2-over 74. He had a birdie and two bogeys going out and the same coming in to put him in a tie for seventh place.
Senior Tyler Carlson also played well, birdying two of the par-5's and the par-4 13th hole, to finish with a 3-over 75 for a tie for 14th place.
Juniors Calum Hill and Conner Kumpula each had two birdies and are tied for 25th place after posting a 5-over 77. Sophomore Jonas Liebich birdied two of his last four holes to shoot a 10-over 82.
Senior Chris Tedesco, who is competing as an individual for Oregon State, is tied for 40th place with a 7-over 79.
Federico Zucchetti of Texas Tech was the only golfer in the 90-player field to finish in red figures after carding a 2-under 70. Texas Tech's Hurly Long and Ryan Books of TCU are tied for second with an even-par 72.
