Ausman's record throw wins discus
April 10, 2016 | Women's Track & Field
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Oregon State track & field program set three school records and junior Melissa Ausman took first place in the discus on Saturday at the 37th annual Sun Angel Classic at Sun Angel Stadium.
Ausman unleashed a throw of 173 feet, seven inches on her first attempt and that mark held up as she defeated a talented field of 20 competitors. Her old mark was 168 feet even, set two years ago at the OSU High Performance Meet.
“That was a huge throw,” OSU coach Kelly Sullivan said. “It was 11 feet further than what she'd thrown this year and five feet further than her old record. That definitely was a highlight.”
Other school records were set on Saturday by:
- Junior Devin Collins, who ran 13.76 and placed ninth among 27 runners in the 100 hurdles to break her own mark of 13.81. Collins also took ninth in the 400 hurdles in 1:00.45, the second-best time in school history.
- The 400 relay foursome of Jasmin McKenzie, Kerissa D'Arpino, Venessa D'Arpino and Collins took second in 46:01 to break the 36-year-old mark of 46.50, set in 1980.
“Devin took second in her sections in both hurdles races and the 400 relay team was outstanding,” Sullivan said. “We were extremely well-represented at one of the best meets in the country.
“To perform as well as we did made it a big trip for that group. We definitely achieved what we hoped to do.”
Also on Saturday, Kerissa D'Arpino took 11th in the 400 hurdles in 1:01.61, the sixth-best time in school history. Freshman Kindel Bailey took eighth in the javelin and improved her No. 4 all-time mark to 138-6.
All told the Beavers set four school records and posted nine all-time top-10 marks at the meet, one of the most prestigious on the West Coast. On Friday, senior Rachel Picknell threw 169-4 in the hammer to break her old school record.
On Friday, Kara Hallock won the 100 hurdles and Dakota Steen won the 400 hurdles to pace a small contingent of Beavers at the John Knight Twilight Meet at Western Oregon.
Running unattached, Hallock finished in 14.46. Redshirt freshman Alba Villaronga was second in 15.75 in her first race in nearly 20 months. Steen took the 400 hurdles in 1:04.36.
The Beavers will compete at the Oregon Relays at Hayward Field on April 14-16. Their lone home competition is the annual High Performance Meet, set for April 29-30 at the Whyte Track & Field Center.
