April 01, 2016 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS – Oregon State senior Ruth Hamblin received a prestigious honor as a well-rounded student athlete on Friday, as she was named a Senior CLASS Award First Team All-American.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Hamblin is one of five players in the nation to earn Senior CLASS Award First Team All-America recognition.
Hamblin has posted a 3.85 GPA as a Mechanical Engineering major, and finished up her undergraduate coursework at the end of winter quarter, completing her degree in less than four years. The center has also become involved in the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association, and was part of a group of students that launched a rocket to 21,750 feet last month. She was highlighted by Chevron and Pac-12 Networks last season as part of their Human Energy Stories series, which recognizes student-athletes majoring in science, technology, engineering and math.
Hamblin, who was named the Pac-12's Defensive Player of the Year for the second-consecutive season last month, is the Pac-12's all-time leader in career blocks and is the No. 1 rebounder in Oregon State history. The 6-foot-6 Canadian, who was named an Academic All-American two weeks ago, is among Oregon State's top-10 scorers of all-time. She is averaging 11.8 points and 10.0 rebounds per game this season.
Oregon State will take on No. 1 seed Connecticut Sunday in the Final Four. The Beavers have already posted the best season in school history, setting the program record with 32 wins and making it further than any Oregon State squad has ever gone in the NCAA Tournament.
