CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 20 Oregon State gymnastics team put a cap on the 2016 home season defeating Seattle Pacific and Ball State with a score of 196.800 Saturday evening on Senior Night. The Beavers were led by junior All-American Madeline Gardiner, who set a career-high with a 39.500 in the all-around, and fellow junior Kaytianna McMillan, who posted two scores of 9.9 or better.
Gardiner won the all-around and tied for the event title on balance beam, tying her career-best with a 9.925, with senior Risa Perez, who notched a career-high of her own. McMillan secured a pair of individual titles on the uneven bars (9.925) and floor exercise (9.90).
However with a secure lead from the outset, the real story of the evening was Senior Night. Perez and fellow senior Jamie Radermacher performed the final routines of their careers in Gill Coliseum before 3,509 members of Beaver Nation. The duo, both of whom transferred into OSU's gymnastics program two years ago, have combined to provide three quality routines a night for the Beavers. Friday night proved no different as Perez raised her career-best beam score (9.925) and got a rise from the crowd with her floor performance, while Radermacher scored 9.825 on the floor.
“I was fortunate enough, even though I transferred, to compete in Gill all four years,” Perez said. “Gill Coliseum is super special to me. I remember the first time I competed in Gill and I thought 'wow this is the coolest crowd I have ever seen.' I was so in awe of the fans and how the team interacts with the fans.”
“It was very special,” Radermacher added. “It was awesome being able to come in with somebody and share those two years. We were starting fresh in a new place and grew together. Tonight definitely more emotional but still a lot of fun. It was really hard knowing it was my last time at this amazing place.”
The pair were honored following the meet along with fellow seniors Sarah Cerami and Jaime Wright, both of whom arrived in Corvallis as OSU gymnasts in 2013 but have since retired from the sport due.
On the competition floor, the Beavers five counting scores on the beam were the highest of the meet as the team posted its highest beam team score of the season (49.425). Early in the lineup, sisters Mariana Colussi-Pelaez and Silvia Colussi-Pelaez achieved career-high scores of 9.825 and 9.900 back-to-back.
Gardiner also tied her career-high on the bars with a score of 9.875.
After two meets this week (Monday and Friday), the Beavers return to a more normal schedule next week when they travel to face LSU and New Hampshire at Texas Woman's University in Dallas next Saturday, Mar. 12. The regular season then wraps up the following Saturday, Mar. 19, at Pac-12 Championships in Seattle.
