CORVALLIS – Oregon State head football coach Gary Andersen announced Wednesday the addition of JR Moala (Mo-AH-lah) and Bojay Filimoeatu (BO-jay FEE-lee-moy-ah-too) to the staff as defensive quality control personnel.
Moala spent the last year on the Beavers staff as a defensive intern. He was a linebacker at Portland State from 1999-2001 before serving a two-year LDS mission in Venezuela. He returned from his mission and played one season at El Camino Junior College in California.
JR's oldest brother, the late Tevita Moala was a standout linebacker for Oregon State (1999-2000) and is most remembered by Beaver fans for returning a fumble for a touchdown against California in the 2000 season that secured the program's first winning regular season since 1970. Eric Moala (2005-06) played linebacker at OSU. His other two brothers, Tolu Moala and Fili Moala, played at Oklahoma State (2008-10) and USC (2005-08), respectively. Haloti Ngata of the Baltimore Ravens is a cousin.
Filimoeatu comes to OSU after playing the 2014 season as a linebacker with the Oakland Raiders, appearing in eight games. He started all 26 games during his two-year collegiate career (2011–12) at Utah State and registered 112 tackles (48 solo), eight sacks, one interception. During his senior season, he posted 71 tackles and five sacks. He helped the Aggies, coached by Andersen, to a pair of bowl games and the Western Athletic Conference title in '12.
Andersen also announced the coaching positions for the Beavers' corps of graduate assistants; Josh Oglesby (offensive line), Grant Schadeberg (defensive line), Brian Wozniak (tight ends), and Kamaron Yancy (secondary). In addition, Keegan Andersen serves as part of the program's operations' team and Lee Taylor with the Beavers' recruiting efforts. Former OSU players Kevin Cummings, Lyle Moevao and Mitch Singler remain on the staff as offensive quality control personnel, and Nick Schindler is joined by Moala and Filimoeatu on the defensive side of the ball.
Former Beavers safety Jake Cookus, who joined the staff last month, will work with the special teams and defensive units.
